Freshwater Fishing Lures

Every  body of water calls for a different type of lure, and it takes some trial and error before a fisherman works out which lures work best in the particular waters they fish.

Many fishermen prefer to use live bait such as freshly dug worms or live minnows when fishing in freshwater environments. But artificial freshwater fishing lures can be equally effective and far less messy and time consuming.

Although there are hundreds of different kinds of freshwater fishing lures available they do fall into one of several basic categories;

• Crankbaits look like small fish and they are cast and retrieved by (as the name suggests) by reeling – or cranking- the line back in

• Plugs are also designed to resemble small fish and different variations float, sink, shimmy or shake which attracts certain kinds of fish
• Poppers are crafted to imitate bugs on the surface of the water, and usually make a sound when tugged.

• Spoons literally resemble a teaspoon, but once in the water resemble a darting minnow.

• Spinners are fitted with various spinning components or propellers, and attract fish both by sound and water vibration.

• Jigs are really just small hooks, often decorated with brightly colored feathers or artificial eyes and limbs, even sparkly tinsel to lure elusive fish.

• Flies are artificial models of the various insects that live naturally alongside freshwater lakes and ponds. Flies weight just a few grams, and are harder to cast properly than other, heavier freshwater fishing lures.
